ABCC needed to cut disputes: Fed Govt

Federal Employment Minister Eric Abetz said there is an "urgent" need to re-establish the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC), following reports that industrial disputes on building sites are acting as a barrier to international construction firms from operating in Australia.

Senator Abezt said the re-establishment of the ABCC would "stamp out lawlessness and improve productivity on building sites". It would also help create jobs, he said.

"The Coalition Government introduced legislation to re-establish the Australian Building and Construction Commission last year but it is being held up by the Labor-Green alliance," Senator Abetz said. "Dodgy union bosses are being more militant than ever before with illegal strikes in defiance of court orders and thuggish behaviour on building sites."
