Concrete producer fined $70k for worker injury

SafeWork SA announced the South Australian Industrial Court has fined Boral Hollostone Masonry $70,000 plus legal fees after a worker sustained injuries to his head and shoulders while cleaning a machine.

SafeWork SA prosecuted the manufacturer under the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act 1986 for failure to ensure the safety of an employee.
However, Magistrate Michael Ardlie noted in his ruling that the incident was "an aberration," as the company had a culture of workplace safety and this was its first
offence.

In June 2010, the worker was cleaning a concrete mixer when a gate was activated, causing significant crush injuries. The man was treated in hospital and has since returned
to work.
