Frequently Asked Questions

Q: If I'm using an Australian cloud storage service: Does that mean my data is stored in Australia?

Not necessarily. Even quite small operators often resell the services of a much larger provider, such as Amazon or Rackspace. This may mean that your data could be actually stored in the United States, China or a number of other countries (especially when the service provider mirrors your data across several data centres to ensure redundancy and backups). This has the potential to significantly expand the range of laws that might apply to your data.

Talk to your service provider and find out what (and where) their back-end infrastructure is. If they can't (or won't) tell you, then you'll need to way up this potential risk in doing business with them.
