West Australian AG opens new Family Violence Court

WA Attorney General Jim McGinty has opened the first of five new courts to help reduce family violence throughout the Perth metropolitan area. Mr McGinty said the new court, in Rockingham, followed the success of the first dedicated Family Violence Court that opened in Joondalup in 2000.

Offenders who have pleaded guilty in a Magistrate’s Court, and agree to take part in the Family Violence Court, will need to complete rehabilitation programs which are designed to address their violent behaviour, he said.

According to the Attorney, it's anticipated that the Rockingham Family Violence Court will work with approximately 48 offenders and their families each year. The first hearings are scheduled for 14 June.

Similar courts will open in Fremantle, Armadale, Midland and Perth over the next year.
