Report "slams" OECD broadband rankings: Coonan

Communications Minister Helen Coonan has welcomed a new report from telecommunications analyst Market Clarity which, she said, shows Australia should be ranked much higher in the OECD broadband rankings.

Senator Coonan said the Market Clarity report re-cast Australia’s ranking as 11th - above the OECD's ranking of 16th - for total broadband subscribers; at ninth position if only broadband over 256kbps is measured, and as high as a record sixth position globally if new statistical banding is adopted.

“Market Clarity said today the OECD rankings were assessed by counting the number of Internet connections that were faster than just 64 Kbps," she said.

“However, Australia does not consider Internet speeds slower than 256Kbps as broadband. Unlike many other countries Australia does not submit these slower Internet connections to the OECD."

The release of the report coincides with Telstra's high-profile media campaign this week against the ACCC. Telstra wants to build a new broadband network but is in dispute with the competition watchdog over wholesale pricing. ACCC chair Graeme Samuel criticised Telstra's newspaper ads and called on the telco to release more details about its proposal.
