Queensland Police Service to create illegal firearms squad
Queensland Police Minister Neil Roberts and Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson have announced the formation of an Illegal Firearms Squad within the Queensland Police Service's State Crime Operations Command.
Mr Roberts said that the squad of five officers, located in the Organised Crime Investigation Unit, would focus on crime involving the use of firearms and the unlawful firearms trade throughout Queensland.
In particular, the squad will target the main sources of illegal firearms, namely:
- gun theft in Queensland and around Australia;
- illegal importation of firearms;
- firearms which were not surrendered in the gun buy-back licensing period post Port Arthur; and
- illegally manufactured weapons.
