Fed: Move to ban criminals from gambling venues

Home Affairs Minister, Brendan O'Connor, has announced work is underway to enable nationwide enforcement of gambling exclusion orders.

Gambling exclusion orders are imposed by state and territory institutions, typically courts, police or gambling commissioners, to stop targeted individuals from entering gaming premises.

"These orders are designed to target criminals and people suspected of being involved in criminal behaviour such as money laundering and organised crime," Mr O'Connor said.

"The orders help to detect and stop illegal behaviour in our gambling venues and protect our entertainment venues - and the whole community - from criminal exploitation," he said.

Presently, orders are only enforceable in the State or Territory in which they are issued.

"We know that in the past people who've been the subject of an order have exploited this limitation by moving their gambling activities to other jurisdictions where venues are not aware of the exclusion order," Mr O'Connor said.

According to Mr O'Connor, the plan would see each state and territory pass legislation to enable gambling exclusion orders that are issued in other jurisdictions to be recognised within their borders, upon application.

It will also see better co-ordination of information about gambling exclusion orders available to law enforcement agencies across Australia.

Work is now underway to design a suitable scheme that meets the needs of different jurisdictions and provides an efficient way to achieve national recognition and co-ordination of gambling exclusion orders.

The plan does not extend to covering voluntary exclusion orders requested by problem gamblers and their families.

The national enforcement of gambling exclusion orders was supported by all jurisdictions at Friday's Ministerial Council on the Administration of Justice meeting in Canberra.
