Labor calls for long-term plan for federal courts

Shadow Attorney-General Nicola Roxon has criticised the government over its management of the federal courts, claiming it lacks "a long-term plan for dealing with the growth in federal jurisdiction".

Speaking during an adjournment speech in the House of Representatives on 4 September, Ms Roxon raised concerns about:

* How the federal courts are structured

* The "constant" extension of the Federal Magistrates Court's jurisdiction

* Court resource levels and delays

* The retirement of Family Court judges without replacement

Ms Roxon also expressed concerns about the judicial appointment process, calling for a full debate about all apointment options including a judicial commission.
